Winter rain and cold weather marked the beginning of the 2017 growing season. Valley floor vineyards looked like ponds, with vines sitting in several feet of water; we even got some snow on Mt. St. Helena – very unusual! Ultimately, the wet weather we received at the beginning of 2017 would end the five-year drought in CA. We had a normal, dry Spring. Bud break came right on time, in mid-March, and the growing season continued at an ideal pace until the end of August 2017 when Napa Valley was hit by a heatwave. Temperatures hit 110 degrees in South Napa, and near 120 in North Napa – and stayed there. The heatwave continued through the beginning of September, which accelerated ripening and lead us to harvest about a week early.
Harvest began on the first day of September before daybreak to ensure grapes remained cool. Grapes were delivered to winery, destemmed, pressed and pumped into a stainless-steel tank to begin a 25-day fermentation. During fermentation temperatures and sugars are checked 3 times a day, and we slowly raise the temperature from the initial 40 degrees to turn sugar into alcohol. After 25 days in steel tanks, wine is pumped into American Oak barrels to age and develop for 12 months before bottling.
The 2017 Chardonnay opens with aromas of banana, coconut, and pineapple. On the palate tropical fruits, apple, pear, and light floral notes. Medium, creamy finish, resembling banana cream pie. Best served at cellar temperature.
Pairs well with sweet potatoes and foods that are caramelized from roasting or grilling. Quite delicious with light pasta dishes and grilled seafood.
